Position Overview

Life Healthcare is seeking an experienced Pharmacy Manager for Life St George’s Hospital in Gqeberha. Reporting to the Hospital Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the management of pharmacy services within the hospital. This includes ensuring quality pharmaceutical services, financial performance, legislative compliance, and effective people management. The Pharmacy Manager will play a crucial role in improving medication safety, enhancing financial efficiencies, and fostering professional development within the pharmacy team.

Key Responsibilities

Medication Safety and Risk Management

  • Implement best operating practices related to medication safety management to minimize errors and ensure compliance with SAPC, DOH, OHSC, and Life Healthcare (LHC) legal and professional standards.
  • Achieve 100% reporting of medication errors to drive continuous improvement in patient safety.

Quality Management

  • Lead the Antimicrobial Stewardship and Clinical Pharmacy Programs to ensure optimal pharmaceutical care.
  • Drive compliance with the LHC quality management system and ensure high levels of customer service.
  • Actively manage and address customer complaints, striving for continuous service improvement.

Financial and Asset Management

  • Achieve the hospital’s budgeted financial targets related to pharmacy operations.
  • Effectively manage cost of sales and stock management, including deadstock, stock holding, and inventory adjustments.
  • Drive cost-efficient initiatives in partnership with the hospital team, optimizing patient outcomes while managing resources.
  • Manage consignment and loan stock and improve operational efficiencies to control the cost of sales, including reducing negative stock and implementing cost reduction strategies.

People Management

  • Lead and manage pharmacy staff, aligning with company values and operational strategies.
  • Recruit, retain, and motivate a high-performing pharmacy team.
  • Support the development of pharmacy staff through participation in the intern and pharmacist assistant training programs.
  • Conduct regular performance feedback sessions and ensure compliance with Continuous Professional Development (CPD) targets.

Relationship and Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong working relationships with doctors, multidisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments to drive collaborative and efficient care delivery.
  • Manage product evaluations and resolve any product complaints to ensure optimal service quality.

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee and ensure that pharmacy operations align with hospital’s strategic objectives and financial measures.
  • Drive process efficiency and contribute to growth and sustainability initiatives within the hospital pharmacy.

Requirements

  • Qualifications:
    • Grade 12 Senior Certificate.
    • B Pharm or Diploma in Pharmacy, with current registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
  • Experience:
    • Private hospital experience is highly advantageous.
    • Proven leadership and people management experience in a hospital setting.
  • Knowledge and Skills:
    • Strong understanding of legislation, operating structures, and relationships within a hospital environment.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and pharmacy management software.
    • Strong leadership capabilities to inspire and develop teams.
