About the Role:

The role of a Tax Administrator Assistant is crucial within the finance team. You will be assisting the Tax Manager with various administrative tasks related to tax compliance and administration, ensuring the company and its clients remain compliant with South African tax laws. This is a hands-on role where you will work closely with both the internal team and clients, playing a pivotal role in tax submissions, assessments, and liaising with SARS (South African Revenue Service). This position is ideal for someone who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and has a strong foundation in tax-related functions.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Tax Administrator Assistant, your day-to-day tasks will include:

  1. Assisting the Tax Manager:
    You will provide support to the Tax Manager in managing the company’s tax obligations and ensuring all processes are followed efficiently. This includes administrative duties and the preparation of various tax-related documents.
  2. Tax Return Preparation and Submission:
    You will assist in the preparation and submission of tax returns for all tax types, including VAT, Income Tax, and Provisional Tax. Ensuring accurate and timely submissions is crucial to avoiding penalties and maintaining good standing with SARS.
  3. Client Liaison:
    You will be the point of contact for clients regarding tax-related inquiries and will work closely with them to gather necessary documentation. Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients is essential to ensure smooth communication.
  4. Assessment Review and Verification:
    Once tax returns are submitted, you will review the tax assessments received from SARS. If discrepancies arise, you will prepare and submit verification replies, ensuring that any issues are resolved promptly.
  5. Objections and Requests for Remission:
    In cases where tax assessments are incorrect or penalties have been imposed, you will assist in preparing and submitting objections and requests for remission. This requires a thorough understanding of tax laws and regulations.
  6. Accfin Tax System:
    Previous experience with the Accfin tax system is highly advantageous as this is the primary tool used for managing tax-related information. If you have not yet used Accfin, you will receive training, but familiarity with tax software is preferred.
  7. E-Filing Experience:
    Proficiency in SARS e-filing is essential. You will be responsible for managing all submissions and communications through the e-filing portal, ensuring compliance and accuracy in every transaction.
  8. Basic Administrative Duties:
    In addition to tax-specific tasks, you will handle general administrative duties such as updating spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel, drafting documents in Word, and managing emails related to tax matters.

Minimum Requirements:

To succeed in this role, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Experience in Tax Administration and Compliance:
    Previous experience in a tax-related role, preferably within a tax department or finance team.
  • Tax Knowledge:
    A solid understanding of various tax types and compliance requirements in South Africa, including VAT, Income Tax, and Provisional Tax.
  • Accfin Tax Experience:
    Familiarity with the Accfin tax system is a bonus but not a strict requirement.
  • E-filing Expertise:
    Prior experience using SARS e-filing is essential for managing tax submissions and communicating with SARS.
  • Microsoft Office Skills:
    Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required, as these tools are used for documentation and data management.
  • Educational Background:
    A tertiary qualification in Commerce, Accounting, or Taxation is highly advantageous. Even if you are still pursuing your degree, this could be a great opportunity to gain practical experience while continuing your studies.
