Position Overview
Life Healthcare is seeking a compassionate and skilled Registered Nurse to join the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Life Cosmos Hospital in Mpumalanga. Reporting to Unit Manager Corrie du Plessis, the successful candidate will be instrumental in delivering high-quality patient care and ensuring compliance with NICU protocols in line with Life Healthcare’s strategic objectives. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with a dedicated healthcare team to provide specialized care to neonates.
Key Responsibilities
The NICU Registered Nurse will play a critical role in delivering patient-centered care while managing unit operations efficiently.
1. Cost and Resource Management
- Staff Scheduling and Hours Management: Evaluate labor hours, manage debit and credit hours, and optimize scheduling to support NICU efficiency.
- Resource Stewardship: Minimize unnecessary stock wastage, facilitate equipment maintenance, and maintain resource accountability within the NICU.
2. Neonatal Patient Care
- Micro Orientation for NICU Staff: Ensure staff undergo department-specific training to meet NICU standards.
- Routine Care Rounds: Conduct daily rounds and manage any complaints, ensuring that neonates receive quality care and families are well-informed.
- Support for Medical Procedures: Assist doctors with daily cases and procedures, maintaining a calm, organized environment to enhance patient care.
- Communication with Families: Provide families with accurate, compassionate information about the care and condition of their newborns, supporting them throughout hospitalization.
3. Risk Management and Safety Compliance
- Infection Control Measures: Implement and monitor infection prevention practices to minimize risks and ensure a safe environment for neonates.
- Compliance with ISO Standards: Follow ISO guidelines to support effective infection control, promoting adherence to safety protocols.
- Cleanliness and Hygiene Standards: Maintain high standards of cleanliness in the NICU to prevent infection and ensure compliance with hospital policies.
4. Relationship Building and Stakeholder Management
- Effective Stakeholder Collaboration: Build and sustain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including doctors, families, and hospital staff, while understanding and incorporating doctor preferences into the NICU environment.
Qualifications and Requirements
To be eligible for this role, the ideal candidate should meet the following qualifications and experience requirements:
- Educational Background:
- A Degree or Diploma in Nursing from an accredited institution.
- NICU Qualification and Experience: Essential to have a specialized qualification in NICU care to ensure high-quality neonatal care.
- Professional Credentials:
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) or an equivalent regulatory body.
- Private Healthcare Knowledge: Familiarity with the private healthcare industry is advantageous for understanding its challenges and key role players.
- Technical Proficiency:
- Proficiency in computer usage to handle electronic health records, patient tracking, and communications.
