Position Overview
Life Healthcare has an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) Section B at Life Cosmos Hospital in Mpumalanga. This role is pivotal in ensuring high-quality, specialized care to patients in a critical care setting. Reporting to the Unit Manager, Tretia Mlilo, the successful candidate will play a key role in managing patient care, supporting clinical protocols, and enhancing the ICU environment through adherence to safety, infection control, and quality standards.
As a Registered Nurse in MICU, you will engage in detailed patient monitoring, participate in daily care routines, and support procedures. Working closely with doctors, other healthcare professionals, and patients’ families, you will help create a safe and supportive environment that meets the complex needs of critically ill patients.
Key Responsibilities
This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities to ensure efficient MICU operations and optimal patient outcomes.
1. Financial and Resource Management
- Labor and Time Management: Monitor and manage employee labor hours, including debit and credit hours, ensuring efficiency in staffing and workload distribution.
- Cost Management: Minimize stock wastage by ensuring the appropriate use and inventory of supplies and equipment in the unit.
- Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all ICU equipment is well-maintained and operational, enabling uninterrupted patient care and safety.
2. Quality Patient Care
- Department-Specific Orientation: Conduct micro-orientation sessions to ensure new and existing staff adhere to MICU-specific protocols.
- Daily Care Rounds: Carry out daily patient care rounds, promptly addressing any issues or complaints to maintain high-quality standards.
- Patient and Family Communication: Provide clear, compassionate, and appropriate information to patients and their families, supporting them during critical care situations.
- Support for Procedures: Assist doctors in performing daily cases and procedures, maintaining an environment that supports seamless patient care.
3. Risk Management and Compliance (SHEQ & Infection Control)
- Preventative Risk Management: Monitor and implement preventative strategies to reduce risk within the ICU, upholding patient and staff safety.
- Infection Control Standards: Maintain rigorous hygiene standards within MICU and ensure adherence to infection control protocols, minimizing contamination risks.
- ISO Compliance: Ensure all ICU practices comply with ISO infection control standards, enhancing the safety and effectiveness of patient care.
4. Stakeholder Relationship Management
- Internal Collaboration: Develop and maintain effective working relationships within the nursing team, ensuring communication and collaboration are aligned with the unit’s goals.
- Doctor and Stakeholder Preferences: Identify and incorporate doctor preferences and stakeholder requirements into unit operations to optimize care delivery.
Qualifications and Requirements
The ideal candidate will possess a strong nursing foundation, coupled with ICU-specific qualifications and hands-on experience.
- Educational Background:
- A Degree or Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution.
- ICU Qualification required, ensuring capability to manage intensive care protocols and equipment.
- Professional Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in ICU, demonstrating expertise in critical care environments and familiarity with ICU protocols.
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) is required.
- Private healthcare experience is advantageous, with an understanding of industry standards and challenges.
- Technical Skills:
- Computer proficiency is preferred, as documentation and patient data management are integral to the role.
