Position Overview
Life Healthcare is currently seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse for the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) – Section A, located at Life Cosmos Hospital in Mpumalanga. Reporting to Unit Manager Ella Masimula, this role will involve close collaboration with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to deliver top-quality patient care in the NICU, adhering to the clinical protocols and strategic objectives of both the hospital and Life Healthcare.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong ICU nursing background and demonstrate a commitment to patient-centered care, effective communication, and resource management.
Key Responsibilities
This position involves various critical tasks to support MICU operations and provide exceptional patient care.
1. Cost and Resource Management
- Staff Scheduling and Labor Management: Monitor and manage employee labor hours, including debit and credit hours, to maintain balanced staffing levels.
- Inventory Control: Minimize stock wastage, facilitate equipment maintenance, and ensure optimal resource utilization to support smooth ICU operations.
2. Patient Care and Support
- Orientation and Staff Development: Ensure that staff members undergo micro-orientation specific to the MICU, preparing them for the unique demands of ICU patient care.
- Routine Rounds and Complaint Investigation: Conduct daily care rounds and address complaints, ensuring patients and their families feel supported and well-informed.
- Patient and Family Communication: Provide clear, empathetic communication to patients and their families, addressing their questions and concerns throughout their care.
- Assistance with Procedures: Support doctors by assisting with various daily procedures, maintaining the highest standards of patient care.
3. Risk Management and Compliance
- Infection Control and Safety: Implement preventative measures to minimize health risks, adhering strictly to Life Healthcare’s infection control and safety policies.
- Hygiene Standards: Uphold cleanliness standards within the unit to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
- ISO Compliance: Ensure compliance with ISO requirements, facilitating infection control and risk management practices.
4. Stakeholder and Team Collaboration
- Relationship Building: Foster effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including understanding and accommodating doctors’ preferences to optimize the care environment.
- Team Collaboration: Work seamlessly with the MICU team to coordinate efforts, ensuring alignment with Life Healthcare’s strategic objectives.
Qualifications and Requirements
The role demands specific qualifications and experience to handle the specialized nature of MICU care.
- Educational Background:
- A Degree or Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution.
- ICU Qualification is essential to equip candidates with the knowledge and skills for critical care.
- Professional Experience:
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in an ICU setting, with experience in the MICU being advantageous.
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Private healthcare industry knowledge is beneficial for navigating its unique challenges and standards.
- Technical Skills:
- Computer proficiency for documenting patient data, accessing hospital systems, and managing schedules.
