Position Overview

Life Healthcare is seeking a skilled and dedicated Registered Nurse for the Trauma Unit at Life Cosmos Hospital in Mpumalanga. This role is critical in delivering emergency care within a fast-paced environment, where timely and efficient interventions can significantly impact patient outcomes. Reporting to the Unit Manager, Brian Mashaba, the successful candidate will play an integral role in upholding the hospital’s standards for clinical excellence and patient-centered care.

As a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Unit, you will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to handle urgent medical situations, manage trauma cases, and provide reassurance to patients and their families. You will be expected to navigate high-pressure scenarios while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor, effectively communicating and collaborating with doctors, other nursing staff, and patients’ families.

Key Responsibilities

This position encompasses a range of responsibilities to ensure patient safety, adherence to hospital policies, and efficient emergency care delivery.

1. Financial and Inventory Management

  • Labor and Resource Efficiency: Monitor and manage employee hours effectively, ensuring fair distribution of labor hours and managing debit and credit hours accurately.
  • Cost Control: Minimize unnecessary stock usage and wastage, promoting sustainable management of resources within the unit.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Facilitate the regular upkeep of equipment to ensure its availability and functionality, supporting the efficiency of emergency services.

2. Quality Patient Care

  • Micro Orientation and Training: Ensure new and existing staff complete a department-specific micro orientation, aligning their practices with unit protocols.
  • Patient and Family Communication: Deliver accurate, appropriate, and comprehensive information to patients and their family members regarding medical procedures and hospitalization processes.
  • Assistance in Procedures: Support doctors during daily cases and procedures, ensuring patients receive the highest quality of emergency care.

3. Risk Management and Compliance (SHEQ & Infection Control)

  • Preventative Risk Management: Implement and monitor safety protocols to reduce risks within the unit, maintaining a secure environment for both staff and patients.
  • Infection Control: Maintain high cleanliness standards within the Emergency Unit and adhere strictly to infection control protocols, reducing the risk of cross-contamination.
  • ISO Compliance: Follow the ISO requirements for infection control, promoting safety and regulatory adherence across all emergency care processes.

4. Stakeholder Relationship Management

  • Internal Collaboration: Work closely with fellow nursing staff and the broader hospital team, ensuring cohesive operations and consistent patient care standards.
  • Doctor and Stakeholder Communication: Understand and address doctor preferences and stakeholder needs, adapting the work environment to meet these requirements and improve service quality.

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate for this role will have a robust foundation in nursing education and hands-on experience within emergency or trauma settings.

  • Educational Background:
    • A Degree or Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution.
    • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) is required.
  • Professional Experience:
    • Previous experience in emergency or trauma nursing is essential to handle the demands of this role.
    • Knowledge of private healthcare industry standards and challenges, particularly in a trauma unit setting, is advantageous.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Computer proficiency is preferred, as digital documentation and patient record-keeping are integral to the role.
