Position Overview: Electrical Designer

As an Electrical Designer, you will be instrumental in developing control systems for special-purpose machines. This role requires a blend of technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills to ensure that designs are not only functional but also efficient and safe. You will work closely with mechanical designers and assembly staff to bring innovative concepts to life, ensuring that all designs meet the specified requirements and industry standards.


Basic Requirements:

To be considered for this position, candidates should meet the following qualifications and criteria:

  1. Formal Education:
  • A National Qualification in Electrical Engineering is required. This foundational knowledge will enable you to effectively tackle the challenges presented in this role.
  1. Driver’s License:
  • A valid Code 8 driver’s license is essential for this position, as you may need to travel to various project sites.
  1. Language Proficiency:
  • Fluency in English and Afrikaans is required to facilitate effective communication within the team and with clients.

Experience Requirements:

Candidates should have a strong background in electrical design and related fields, including:

  • Electrical Panel Building:
    Hands-on experience in building electrical panels is essential. You will need to understand the intricacies of panel assembly to create effective designs.
  • Field Wiring:
    Proficiency in field wiring of related hardware to panels is crucial for this role.
  • Fault Finding:
    The ability to troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues is vital. You should be comfortable diagnosing problems and implementing solutions quickly.
  • Knowledge of Pneumatic Systems:
    Familiarity with pneumatic valves and actuators will be advantageous, as these components are integral to many control systems.
  • Software Proficiency:
    Experience using MS Office is required for documentation and reporting. Extensive design experience with Eplan is also necessary for effective system design.
  • Control Hardware Knowledge:
    A solid understanding of electrical control hardware is critical, including power supplies, PLCs, sensors, actuators, IO devices, printers, scanners, IPCs, valves, cables, motor and drive systems, and bus systems.
  • Pneumatic Software Knowledge:
    Working knowledge of Fluid Draw or similar pneumatic design packages is a plus.

The primary objective of the Electrical Designer is to create innovative control systems for specialized machinery. This involves a range of tasks and responsibilities, including:

  1. Control System Design:
  • You will be responsible for designing electrical control systems for special-purpose machines, ensuring that they are efficient, reliable, and meet customer specifications.
  1. Pneumatic System Design:
  • In addition to electrical design, you will also contribute to the pneumatic design of systems, integrating both electrical and pneumatic components effectively.
  1. Panel Layout:
  • You will create panel layouts that optimize space and enhance functionality, ensuring that all components are easily accessible for maintenance and operation.
  1. Specification and Calculation:
  • The role requires you to specify, calculate, and rate all control hardware used in designs, ensuring that they meet operational and safety standards.
  1. Safety Assessments:
  • Conducting safety assessments and risk analyses of control systems is vital to ensure compliance with safety regulations and to mitigate potential hazards.
  1. Collaboration with Mechanical Design:
  • You will feed part information to mechanical designers to ensure that electrical components are effectively integrated into the overall system design.
  1. Cable and Pipe Routing:
  • Determining optimal cable and pipe routing on the facility and allocating space accordingly is a key responsibility.
  1. Guiding Assembly Staff:
  • You will advise and guide electrical assembly staff to ensure that the final product aligns with the design intentions.
  1. Participation in Design Reviews:
  • Engaging in design review meetings internally and with customers will be crucial for aligning expectations and ensuring project success.
